Maine Woods

I painted this watercolor after thumbing through a stack of Andrew Wyeth books at the library. At the time, I had not been to Maine, but was trying to figure out how to get out there. Hilary and I would spend our honeymoon between Portland and the Blue Hills years later. Maine's rocky coastline and timbered islands looked similar to the San Juan Islands, with which I was familiar. I figured the woodlands of Maine looked something like this. I must have just bought my first bottle of frisket and was eager to try it out. I sold this painting in a small gallery a couple years later - I believe it was my first sale. The woman who ran the place couldn't tell me who bought it and was being kind of cagey. Turned out, my mom bought it and sent it my brother in Texas.
