While there are 3 golf courses within 10 miles of our house and a dozen more within a couple of hours drive, I play at Silver Fox in Pablo, MT. Its a narrow parkland-style, nine-hole, par 3 course owned by the college. The course is uncrowded and friendly with mountain views for miles. I hit my first hole-in-one at Silver Fox (Hole #7, blue tee, 7-iron). The season here runs mid-May to mid-October, bracketed tightly by snowmelt and snowfall. There's an enthusiastic summer league and a season pass costs just $300. John and I played 150 rounds this summer.
Its not a fancy course or one that even requires you bring a driver. Short game play and restraint off the tee are the keys to success here. The course is properly played by walking and carrying your bag.
The well-maintained greens could use a few more humps and hollows as well as a good rolling. I think installing bunkers on 1, 6, and 8 would improve play, too. And we need to flatten out those tee boxes and maybe add some tall ornamental grass to the areas around all rock walls.
But its the local course. Its our course. And its perfect.
We were lucky to play SFGC late into October this year. These photos are from Friday, October 25th, the final day of the 2019 season. Snow fell the following Monday.
